Castle Campbell is sited at the head of Dollar Glen. It dates from the early fifteenth century. Originally called Castle Gloom, it was acquired by the 1st Earl of Argyll in 1465 and remained in the Campbells’ possession until 1807. The painting is from the northwest. The condition of the east buildings shows the painting to have been made after the 1880s reconstruction. The donor said that the painting had been in the family home in West Burnside as long as he could remember, so it must have been painted before the 1930s.
