In the foreground on the left are two figures sitting on a bank, eating. One is a man in a wide-brimmed black hat, a red waistcoat, and holding a stick; the other is a woman in a straw hat and dark clothes. On the right are several sheep and goats grazing: a large tree, its roots exposed, reaches up to the top of the picture. Beside the figures, past the trees, is a river, which winds to the right in the distance. There is a small boat on it. The river is crossed by a five-arched bridge, linking the left bank with Chepstow Castle on the right, which is built on a sheer cliff. The castle walls are ruins, with foliage growing through windows and up walls. There are small houses surrounding it.
