Carel Weight was born in London to a German mother. He always said that he had a lonely childhood which was full of dreams of ghosts, and that sense of the supernatural in the everyday is apparent in many of his paintings. In the posture of the child in this painting Weight seems to refer in part to Edvard Munch's famous painting 'The Scream'. For many years Carel Weight was professor of painting at the Royal College of Art in London.
