Actaeon, semi-clothed, appears from the right. In the mythological story told in Ovid's 'Metamorphoses', Diana, the virgin goddess of the hunt, is accidentally discovered naked in her secret bathing place. She enacts revenge by transforming Actaeon into a stag and he is killed by his own dogs. Here, Diana is more clothed than Actaeon. Her pose actually echoes that of Actaeon in Titian's famous painting of the same subject, which was exhibited around the time this painting was made.

The pair of artists painted this scene in emulation of a celebrated collaboration between Carlo Marratti and Gaspard Dughet on the same subject, which hangs at Chatsworth House.
