The branches of two oak trees form a natural arch through which we glimpse a clearing where a heavily burdened woman is caught in patch of sunlight. With its rustic subject matter and its broad painterly technique, visible particularly in the foreground, this work is typical of the Barbizon School. This was an informal group of painters who worked in the forest of Fontainebleau outside Paris.
