The ship 'Rifleman' left London on 28th December 1872 with cargo and passengers for Australia. In March 1873, en route, Captain Longmuir, a native of Stonehaven was beaten to death while he slept by the steward, who was over-powered by the second mate. Aberdeen Maritime Museum also displays the gold pocket watch given to the 2nd mate by the grateful owners of the ship.
