Campbell commanded the Highland Brigade during the Crimean War in 1854, including at the Battle of Balaclava. At the outbreak of the Indian Mutiny in 1857, Lord Palmerston offered Clyde the command of the forces in India. He led the final relief of Lucknow in 1857 and was created Baron Clyde in 1858, bringing the rebellion to a final end in December of that year. He returned to England in 1859 and was made a Field Marshal.
