Three-quarter left side, head and chest portrait of Colonel Volbert, in military dress with a medal pinned to his jacket, and a large grey handlebar moustache. Colonel Volbert is represented in a proud pose with his head held high. The background is painted in very dark grey with some exaggerated brush work to the left of the painting. The brush work appears to be emphasised on the figure as well, with textured marks and thick paint being used.
