Markey Robinson was born in Belfast, the son of a house painter, he worked as a welder and was also a featherweight boxer for a time. A merchant seaman for many years, his only formal art training was a brief spell at the Belfast College of Art. He showed two paintings of the Blitz on Belfast at the Northern Ireland Civil Defence art exhibition in 1943 and thereafter became a regular exhibitor in Belfast and Dublin.

Robinson’s landscape is probably the work for which he is best known. It is an area which he worked on as consistently as that of still life, clown and figure studies. His highly distinctive style, almost primitive in appearance, embodies flat areas of colour enclosed with black or dark blue outlines.
