Younghusband's interests lay in problems of the poor, and whilst a full-time lecturer at the London School of Economics (1933–1957), she devoted her spare time to the Citizens' Advice Bureaux, care committees, juvenile courts, the Bermondsey Settlement and women refugees. During the War she conducted surveys for the National Assistance Board and the UK Carnegie Trust. In 1955 she chaired a working party on the role of Social Workers in the local authority health and welfare services, which was instrumental in the establishment of the Council for Training in Social Work, and initiated a certificate in social work, and the setting up of the National Institute for Social Work Training in 1961.
