Nurse. Born in Sydney, Australia, McCarthy trained at the London Hospital. She joined the army nursing service and served during the Boer War. From 1902 to 1910 she was in Queen Alexandra's Imperial Military Nursing Service and became Principal Matron at the War Office. McCarthy was on the first troopship to go to France in 1914, and was Matron-in-Chief for the British Armies throughout the war. By 1918 she was in charge of 6,500 nurses dealing with battle wounds, the threat of infection and the hitherto unknown effects of gas. After the war she was appointed to the Territorial Army Nursing Service.
