Born in Ilford, Smith studied at the Oxford Playhouse School and appeared in a revue in the 1950s before joining the Old Vic (1959–1960). In 1964 she played Desdemona in 'Othello' opposite Laurence Olivier at the National Theatre and was nominated for an Oscar the following year for her film performance in that role. Other memorable film roles include those in 'The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie' (1969), for which she won an Oscar, 'A Private Function' (1984), 'A Room with a View' (1986) and 'Tea with Mussolini' (1999). Smith is also known for playing Professor McGonagall in the Harry Potter films and the Dowager Countess of Grantham in 'Downton Abbey', for which she won two Emmy awards. Recent films including 'The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel' (2014) and 'The Lady in the Van' (2015).
