The most famous explorer of his age, renowned for his efforts to eradicate the slave trade through legitimate commerce and Christianity. He went to South Africa as a missionary in 1840, and made a series of journeys into the interior; discovering Lake Ngami, in 1849, and the Zambesi in the centre of the continent in 1851, and undertook the epic journey from Cape Town through west central Africa from 1852–1856.
