The statuette represents the biblical figure David, a shepherd boy who killed the giant Goliath with a stone thrown from a sling. The statuette appears in the 1877 Coalbrookdale Company catalogue (No. 155). Described as 'David slinging', the price list shows the figure priced at £13 4s. Originally the statuette had a staff at its feet. A version was exhibited at the Great Exhibition of 1851.
