This magnificent table has a rather special appeal for connoisseurs and dog lovers alike. Weighing 16 hundredweight and made entirely of cast iron, the Deerhound Hall Table is a unique example of the skills of the Coalbrookdale Company. Designed by John Bell (1811–1895), it was made in 1855 for the Paris International Exhibition and represents a truly remarkable piece of casting. At each end of the four corners, there is a life-size model of a deerhound, resting on its haunches and looking directly up towards its master's head. The hounds wear the arms granted in 1834 to John Hargreaves of Broad Oak, near Blackburn in Lancashire. It is thought that this table was purchased from the exhibition as a wedding present for his eldest son, Thomas.
