Sebastiano Ricci studied in Venice under Federico Cervelli and then travelled extensively around Italy under the patronage of various noblemen. Eventually his travels brought him to England where he remained for ten years, painting works for several stately houses. He also decorated the hall of Burlington House, London as well as providing decorations and the altarpiece for the chapel in Chelsea Hospital. He is believed to have left England and returned to his career in Italy when he was not chosen to paint the cupola in St Paul's Cathedral.

This painting was once attributed to Tiepolo. It may have been painted during Ricci's ten year sojourn in England.
