Gifford, a Baptist Minister, was in 1756 the Museum’s first numismatist and also the first Assistant Librarian in the Department of Manuscripts. He was the donor of around 28 portraits, some of which were transferred to the National Portrait Gallery in 1879. His second wife brought him a fortune of £6,000. His coin collection was bought by George II and he left a collection of books, manuscripts, pictures and curiosities to the Baptist Academy at Bristol, his birthplace.
