George Robert Cowie was born in Aberdeenshire and educated at Banff Academy, Robert Gordons College, Aberdeen and the University of Aberdeen. On completion of his training as a solicitor, he was appointed town clerk of Kintore. In 1938 he became assistant secretary of Aberdeen University and remained there until 1947. He was appointed secretary of Queen's University on 1st January 1948, a position he retained for almost 30 years, until his retirement in 1977. His period of office coincided with considerable expansion at the university including the erection of the Keir and Ashby complexes, Queen's Elms, the Medical Biology Centre, the Student's Union and the Physical Education Centre.
