Allan Ramsay was born in Edinburgh, the son of the Edinburgh poet, Allan Ramsay. He trained at the Academy of St Luke in Edinburgh before studying under Hans Hysing in London 1732–1733. He visited Italy 1736–1738 where he studied under Imperiali in Rome, drew at the French Academy there and had the distinction of being taught by Francesco Solimena in Naples. He settled in London 1838 (not yet 25) and soon became one of the most elegant and subtle of British portrait painters. He painted the Prince of Wales for Lord Bute 1757 and when the Prince became George III was made King's Painter 1761. His portraits have considerable charm and sensitivity. Horace Walpole considered, with some justification, that Ramsay and Reynolds were the two portrait painters of the age and that Ramsay excelled with women, Reynolds with men.
