This painting shows the dressing room of the first Byre Theatre in St Andrews. The Byre Theatre was founded in 1933 by Alexander B. Paterson, a local freelance journalist and prolific playwright. His first home was a semi-derelict cow byre which was cleaned out and run as a theatre. To reach the changing rooms the cast had to climb up a ladder on the outside of the building, and when it was time to go on stage they first had to climb down the ladder, exit the building entirely, then re-enter the auditorium through another door. The original Byre Theatre was demolished in 1969 and a new, purpose-built theatre opened nearby in 1970. This was subsequently replaced by an award-winning building in 2001.
