This painting dates from the end of the seventeenth century but is typical of the work of Dutch artists in the country’s great period of marine painting. The artist was a prominent painter of this genre and enjoyed great success during his own lifetime.

The low horizon of this work, as with most other works of a similar nature, was ideally suited to exploiting in full the possibilities for depicting dramatic climatic conditions. The suggested speed of the heavy clouds shown in the painting reflects the turbulent waves; the wind-blown tree and rolling barrel punctuate the wind-swept expanse.
