Born in Swansea, Thomas began writing as a reporter for the South Wales Evening Post. Eighteen Poems published in 1934 established him in literary circles. Further poems and short stories were published as Twenty-Five Poems (1936), The Map of Love (1939), Portrait of the Artist as a Young Dog (1940) and Deaths and Entrances (1946), including his best-known poem 'Fern Hill'. During the Second World War, Thomas was a regular broadcaster on BBC radio and he toured America in 1950, 1952 and 1953. Thomas completed the 1954 radio play Under Milk Wood in May 1953, shortly before his untimely death from alcohol abuse. It was first broadcast by the BBC in January 1954.
