A hand-painted Easter card sent to John Christian, the artist's great-nephew. Arthur Edwin Baker followed his father into the dry-salting industry and later became a shipping clerk. During the First World War he worked in munitions and as an Air Raid Patrol Warden during the Second War. He was made a Freeman of the City of London. Although he received no training in art, he was a prolific painter, particularly in later life, producing watercolour paintings of local views, specifically of the Marks Gate area.
