In the winter of 1843 to 1844 William James Müller spent three months in Lycia, a remote area of south-west Turkey. The watercolours he made there of the landscape and classical sites are among his best work, and many are now in the British Museum. This oil painting would have been made on his return, but it is possible that it was unfinished at his untimely death and was completed by his brother, Edmund Gustavus Müller. It is unclear whether the interior is a nomad's tent or a cottage, which suggests it was finished by someone who had never been to Lycia.
