This uniquely successful horse, who raced in 1769 & 1770, named after the solar eclipse on the day of his birth (1 April 1764), 'was never beaten, never had a whip flourished over him, or felt the tickling of a spur, or was ever for a moment distressed by speed or rate of a competitor, outfooling, outstriding and outlasting every horse which started against him.' (John Lawrence, 1809). He also sired 334 winners. On his death in 1789 an autopsy and detailed dissection were performed, and his skeleton preserved by Charles Vialde Saintbel. In 1791 Saintbel became the first professor of the Veterinary College, London, now the Royal Veterinary College.
