Edward (1837–1898), 1st Earl of Lathom, was Pro Grand Master of the United Grand Lodge of England, the governing body of Freemasonry in England and Wales, from 1891 to 1898. The Pro Grand Master is the representative of the Grand Master when he is unable to attend meetings. In this portrait, which was commissioned by the United Grand Lodge of England, he is wearing the robes of the Lord Chamberlain of the Royal Household. The Masonic badge, or jewel, of the Pro Grand Master can be seen on the table next to him in front of the inkwell.
