Edward Fiennes de Clinton (1512–1585) served as Lord High Admiral, 1550–1553 and 1558–1585, and was appointed a Knight of the Garter in 1551. He was created Earl of Lincoln in 1572. The sitter has been identified from his attributes: the compass he points at and the Whistle of Honour of the Lord High Admiral he wears round his neck.
