Son of Edward II and Isabella of France, he was a shrewd politician and a man of culture. He was crowned at the age of 14. He married Philippa of Hainault in 1328 and gave considerable estates to the Queen’s College, 1341.
This portrait is on an oak panel and is very similar to other posthumous portraits, all based on the effigy from his tomb in Westminster Abbey.
