Son of Richard, 3rd Duke of York, on whose death in 1460 he took command of the Yorkists. Victories at Mortimer Cross and Towton in 1461 won him the throne and he was crowned in 1461. The portrait is probably based on an engraved portrait, listed in the Richard III Exhibition Catalogue, National Portrait Gallery, 1973. The engraving was found inserted in a 1472 edition of Livy, and might be a contemporary image of Edward.
