This painting is a portrait of Emily Burton (1867–1947) of Silverdale, Lancashire. She met Gordon Bottomley in 1895. They were married in 1905 and moved to The Sheiling, Silverdale in 1914 where they spent the rest of their lives. Emily Bottomley was a talented amateur artist and there ninety-one watercolours by her in the Tullie House collection.
