Ernest Newton was articled to Norman Shaw in 1873 and later became his chief assistant. In 1879 he began his own practice and soon became an exponent of the Arts and Crafts movement, a founder of the Art Workers' Guild and becoming an early member of the Arts and Crafts Society. His design speciality was houses, both suburban and large country houses. Later he was also made joint editor of the 'Architectural Review'. In 1918 he was awarded the Royal Institute of British Architects Royal Gold Medal and the Royal Academy made him a full Academician. Arthur Hacker was a well-known Victorian painter of portraits, genre and large allegorical paintings.
