One of Scotland’s most highly regarded living artists, Frances Walker RSA was born in Kirkcaldy in 1930 and trained at the Edinburgh College of Art. She splits her time between Aberdeen and Tiree, where she lives in one of the few remaining traditional thatched cottages. Having painted many of the wildest parts of Scotland, her works not only evoke this wildness but also bears witness to the people who have lived in Scotland and shaped the land with their labour.

Walker explores the rhythms and the balance of relationships between sky, land and sea often creating peaceful yet honest images. Her elegant use of line and simplicity of colour modestly emphasises the sense of place, often on the edge of landscape, where the land meets the sea.
