Wood travelled frequently around Europe but spent much of his time in France, where he painted many of his important works. 'Fair at Neuilly, France' is an early work which demonstrates the sophisticated simplicity in his style which endured throughout his career. It has a dream-like quality to it, with figures and setting that resemble a decorative frieze.

The image is painted onto board to enable a hard, flat surface to be attained.
