In 2002 ArtCare helped the Ophthalmology Department commission some artwork for their newly-created waiting areas. The artwork had to appeal to patients of all ages and be able to hold the viewer’s attention over a period of time. It also needed to create a unique identity for the clinic and provide a focal point from the main corridor to help patient way-finding. Daphne Gradidge was commissioned to create a series of artworks for the area. After consultation with staff she came up with sketches based on the theme of ‘Fantasy Garden’. As she said: "I liked the suggestion that strong topiary shapes could be good in a waiting area where eyesight is not always the sharpest during treatment. So I worked on those lines and introduced an element of 'trompe l’oeil'.
