In keeping with many of his oil paintings, Fergusson's sculptures also relate closely to the work of his lifelong companion, the dancer Margaret Morris (1891–1980). The solid, robust forms used to convey the idea of the nude's vitality and strength are emphasised by the enclosed pose chosen for the figure.

Although much better known for his work as a painter, Fergusson produced a significant group of sculptures between 1915 and 1924. His experiments with three-dimensional form distinguish his work from that of his fellow Colourists; Peploe (1871–1935) Cadell (1883–1937) and Hunter (1877–1931).
