This work dates from the period when Frink was teaching at St Martin’s School of Art (1954–1962). Although she is best known as a sculptor, Frink produced a large body of work on paper, including prints, during her career, which drew on the same subject matter as her three-dimensional work of men, dogs, horses and birds. Although Henry Moore was a strong influence on her work, unlike Moore she rarely portrayed female figures and instead, almost exclusively depicted male figures, writing in the 1984 catalogue raisonné of her work, 'I have focused on the male because to me he is a subtle combination of sensuality and strength with vulnerability’.
