Herring was a stage-coachman who turned animal painter. He drove the ‘High Flyer’ stage-coach between London and York for four years before devoting himself entirely to painting. For many years he worked in the Doncaster area, and painted 33 successive winners of the St Leger. Herring painted pictures for George IV and Queen Victoria. His son, John Frederick Herring II worked in the same style.
