Ian Fleming moved to Arbroath in 1948 to teach at the renowned Hospitalfield's art school, during which time he moved towards painting instead of the printmaking and etching he had concentrated on previously. His works evoke a sense of isolation and stillness reflecting the emotions of those involved in the fishing industry, both for those at sea and those loved ones left at home.

At the time when Fleming painted these scenes, Arbroath was one of the larger fishing ports in Scotland. Arbroath is also famous as the home of Arbroath smokies. These are pairs of haddock tied at the tails and smoked over burning hardwood chips in square barrels. This process still takes place in a number of backstreet smokeries close to Arbroath harbour.
