Eric Gadsby's work is abstract both in terms of form and colour and he rejects any attempt to read allusion to nature in it. He prescribed for himself the discipline of never using more than three basic colours in a painting.

'Flobe', a contraction of 'flow' and 'lobe', is a formal construction, the thinly applied paint giving the work a feeling of constraint, despite the vividness of its crimson, green and yellow colour scheme. Robert Hughes wrote of Gadsby's work: "...you read these paintings, not as solid forms, but as metaphors of light energy. They generate a strong illusion of warped space."

This work was included in 'The New Generation' exhibition at the Whitechapel Gallery in 1966.
