Sir Cedric Morris was born in Swansea, and was a self taught artist. He developed a distinctive and fairly consistent technique of his own, notably his stunning use of colour and powerful compositions. He often painted by dabbing colour rather than using brush strokes. He ran a painting school in Dowlais in the 1930s, part of a movement to relieve the great depression in the area.

This painting is a wonderful example of the artist’s style, the subject matter lending itself to use of a range of colours and textures. It hung in Cyfarthfa school for many years, before the art master of the time. Dewi Bowen, ensured that it was transferred to the museum. The painting has been exhibited at the Tate Gallery.
