This painting is said to be of Frederick the Great being taught to play the flute by Johann Joachim Quantz. It shows two seated figures playing a flute duet, both seated at a table covered with an Eastern carpet with music sheets headed 'Menuets' on the table. There is a rich landscape setting with flowing blue drapery to the rear. Quantz is shown looking intently at his pupil. A sculpted putto with a violin overlooks the scene, like a muse. Quantz returned to the Prussian court twice a year to teach Prince Frederick, and in December 1741 he moved to Berlin where his duties centred on the supervision of the King's private evening concerts.
