This picture exploits the picturesque contrast between the elegant figures gambling in the foreground and the peasants carousing by the fire in the right background. Whatever their social milieu, the discarded shoe indicates the men’s reluctance to leave the welcoming tavern, to the profit of the landlord on the left who chalks up their debts on a board. The inclusion of middle-class figures and the brighter palette suggest a date in the late 1640s.
