Gavin Robinson was born in Belfast in 1984. He attended Grosvenor Grammar School, and graduated from the University of Ulster as a Bachelor of Law, and from Queen's University Belfast with an MA in Irish Politics.

Robinson was called to the Northern Ireland Bar in 2008. He was employed as a special advisor to the First Minister of Northern Ireland from 2011–2012 and 2013–2015.

In 2010 Robinson was co-opted on to Belfast City Council, to replace Sammy Wilson. Robinson was elected to Belfast City Council, the following year, representing the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP). He was designated as Alderman in 2012, and served on Council until 2015.

Robinson was elected as an MP in May 2015.
