Although George Henry Law served as Bishop of Bath and Wells for over 20 years, this is not what he is best remembered for. He set up a formal system of training for clergymen. Traditionally, either a degree from Oxford or Cambridge or recommendation from another clergyman was all that was required for ordination. This meant that standards in the clergy were inconsistent. Keen to improve this situation, George Law set up the first theological college outside Oxford and Cambridge Universities.
