George I would have been popular in Coventry for the reason that he was the son of Sophia, youngest daughter of Elizabeth, Queen of Bohemia. As a child, Elizabeth had been educated at Coombe Abbey (on the edge of Coventry) under the care of the Harrington family and sheltered within the safety of the city walls during the tense period of the Gunpowder Plot.

George is shown with one hand on his sword, symbolising his military experience, gained fighting for the cause of his father's kingdom, the Electorate of Hanover, on the battlefield. This portrait, a version after the 1715 original by Kneller, was presented to the corporation in 1719 by Sir Adolphus Oughton, MP for Coventry.
