Grandson of George II and son of Frederick Louis, Prince of Wales, George III succeeded to the throne in 1760. During his long reign he and his wife, Charlotte, earned the respect of the middle classes for their decorous family life. The end of his life was blighted by bouts of debilitating illness.

This portrait is one of ninety replica pairs of portraits of George III and Queen Charlotte produced as a single commission from the King to Ramsay as Court Painter.
