George Keith, 10th and last Earl Marischal, took the Jacobite side during the 1715 Rising; when that venture failed, he was attainted and fled with his brother into exile in Europe in 1716. After some years in France the Earl spent many years living quietly in Spain. He moved to France in 1742 but growing weary of the Jacobite intrigues which led to the 1745 Rising, left the service of Prince Charles.
