This work was first listed in Norris's catalogue of 1839, which stated: 'It is not known by whom this Portrait was painted, but it was certainly executed when Dr. Aldrich was in Italy.' The attribution to Batoni, as one of his first portraits of Englishmen on the Grand Tour, was made by Dr Bendor Grosvenor for his television programme 'Britain's Lost Masterpieces'.
