Professor Gerald Bernbaum, FRSA, became Vice-Chancellor and Chief Executive of South Bank University, now London South Bank University (LSBU), in 1993. This painting was commissioned on his retirement in 2001. Prior to his stint at the University, Bernbaum spent his career as an educationist and university administrator. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts and Chairman of the Governors of Morley College. In 2004 he was awarded an honorary degree by LSBU.

The artist Bryan Organ is mainly known for his portraiture, and has painted likenesses of many public figures. He is represented at the National Portrait Gallery, in London. Arguably, his best known portrait is of Lady Diana Spencer, which was commissioned and completed 20 years before this painting.
