Mofffat Lindner was born in Birmingham to a wealthy family, studying art at the Slade School in London under Alphonse Legros. His working process involved making notes on the spot using brush and colour, and then he said " I just sit there until there until the effect is gone, letting it soak into my mind and making mental notes". In its imagery and composition this painting refers to Turner's famous picture of 'The Fighting Temeraire'.
